She made lists, especially before going on vacation. She would start a list weeeeeeks before departure and write down everything not to forget -camera, film, sunscreen, etc...

Last day of the year. I only remember one New Year with her -I think there were more (probably) but right now I only remember 2000. We spent it in rural Kansas -yes- at the dance hall (?) of Greeley, KS, population 327 (in 2000), with her then boyfriend Blake. A drunk cowboy slapping my ass rather hard is all I can remember of that night.

Elle faisait des listes, surtout avant de partir en vacances. Elle commencait a ecrire ce dont on aurait besoin des semaines a l'avance. Appareil photo, pellicules, creme solaire, etc...

Dernier jour de l'annee. Je ne me souviens que d'un reveillon du 1er de l'an avec elle. Il avait du y en avoir d'autres, mais je ne me souviens que de celui de l'an 2000. On l'avait passe au fin fond du Kansas rural, a la salle des fetes (?) de Greeley, 327 habitants en 2000; on etait avec son boyfriend de l'epoque, Blake.
Je ne me souviens que d'une chose: un cowboy bourre qui m'avait donne une grande claque sur le cul au passage...

She had a snorting laugh. Everyone would laugh because of her laugh.

We had a big dining room table, made of solid wood. We moved a lot and always that table moved with us. It ended up being her desk at some point. She used to tell the story that she wanted a lot of children, but that in the end she was glad she had only me, because she would not have been able to travel like she did with me.

Elle avait un rire contagieux, parce qu'elle reniflait tres fort quand elle riait de bon coeur.

On avait une tres grande table a manger, faite en bois massif. On demenageait souvent, mais cette grande table nous a toujours suivi. Elle avait fini par en faire son bureau. Elle racontait qu'elle aurait voulu avoir plein d'enfants, mais que finalement, c'etait bien qu'elle n'ait eu que moi, parce qu'elle n'aurait autrement pas pu se permettre de voyager.

Last year, she had bought Asher a Woody doll for $1. She went to a flea market with a friend and she got him a Woody. She loved Woody -a cowboy- and so did Asher. It was old and rugged, and didn't work anymore (his voice), but he was so happy. I will never get rid of that Woody...

L'annee derniere elle avait achete un Woody a Asher pour 1 dollar, a un marche aux puces auxquel elle etait allee avec une amie. Elle aimait beaucoup Woody -un cowboy- et Asher aussi. Il etait use et ne marchait plus (sa voix), mais Asher etait content. Je ne me separerai jamais de ce Woody.

Her nose bent a little at the tip when she laughed, so my dad had nicknamed it the Concord, after the plane.

Asher got Legos for his birthday. She would have LOVED building the space ship with him. She loved Legos and building stuff. I remember playing with her Legos from when she was little, at my grandma's. She loved building the toy in Kinder chocoloate eggs also - I think she would always be the one to build them for me, but I didn't mind.

Asher a eu des Legos pour son anniversaire. Elle aurait vraiment adore construire le vaisseau spatial avec lui. Elle adorait les Legos et construire des trucs. Je me souviens de jouer avec les Legos de son enfance chez ma grand-mere. Elle aimait aussi les jouets des oeufs Kinder surprise; c'est toujours elle qui les construisait -mais ca ne me derangeait pas!

She loved garlic. Fresh garlic. She would toast bread, rub fresh garlic on it and pour some olive oil on top.

Elle aimait beaucoup l'ail. L'ail frais. Elle se faisait griller du pain, frottait de l'ail dessus avec un filet d'huile d'olive.

Her favorite movie was "Out of Africa" -with her favorite actor Robert Redford, and Meryl Streep.
I got her the VHS one year for her birthday.

She was a light-turn-offer. She was very good at managing he rmoney and especially at saving wherever she could. While I understood her well meaning, she sometimes drive me crazy turning off lights I wanted on!
Other things she would do to save was to turn off the oven or stove a little early, since it would stay hot for the rest of the cooking time. It was pennies saved, but it made her feel good.


Elle economisait en eteignant les lumieres. Elle gerait tres bien son argent, et savait tres bien economiser. Meme si je comprenais le principe, elle me rendait parfois folle a eteindre des lumieres que je voulais allumees!
Parfois, elle eteignait aussi le four ou la cuisiniere avant la fin de la cuisson, puisqu'ils restaient chauds. C'etait seulement des centimes d'economise, mais ca la faisait se sentir bien.

Memory 35

When we lived in Colorado, we'd often get together on the weekends (Keith worked weekends). I'd mostly go visit her in her mountain home, but sometimes she'd come down 'to town' and we'd go shopping. Our favorite place to eat was Red Lobster and we'd have the shrimp pasta -a tradition. I don't eat shrimp anymore, and I don't go to red Lobster much. This was our thing, for a little while.


Quand on habitait dans le Colorado, on passait souvent nos weekends ensemble (Keith travaillait). Le plus souvent j'allais chez elle, dans la montagne, mais parfois c'est elle qui descendait 'en ville' et on allait faire du shopping. Notre restaurant prefere etait "Red Lobster" (Homard Rouge) une chaine. On mangeait toujours les pates aux crevettes avec sauce ail et beurre -notre petite tradition. Je ne mange plus de crevettes et je ne vais que tres rarement a Red Lobster. C'etait notre truc, pendant une periode.

It was no secret she loved the American West. She decided her favorite state was Wyoming because it contained her favorite National Park (Yellowstone) and he favorite western town and rodeo (Cheyenne). After her divorce in 2006, she legally changed her name to Christine Wyoming Bornert. She had no middle name before, so she added it.

Ce n'etait pas un secret qu'elle aimait l'ouest americain. Elle avait decide que son etat prefere etait le Wyoming, car c'est la que son parc national prefere se trouve (Yellowstone) et sa ville western preferee (Cheyenne). Apres son divorce en 2006, elle avait legalement change son nom: Christine Wyoming Bornert. Comme elle n'avait pas de 2eme prenom et qu'ici c'est tres courant, elle avait ajoute l'etat a son nom.

Today was Asher's birthday, he turned 5. She would have been the first one to wish him a happy birthday. She used to send emails for each of his month birthday when he was little... Miss her so much.


Aujourd'hui c'etait l'anniversaire d'Asher, il a eu 5 ans. Elle aurait ete la premiere a lui souhaiter. Quand il ete bebe, elle envoyait des emails pour chacun de ses mois-anniversaires... Elle me manque tellement.

Other kids loved my mom because she was cool. I was both flattered and a bit possessive about it -hey, she's mine!
One time we were on some kind of church youth camping trip and she had brought the soundtrack of Sister Act that we all sang along. This was a pretty conservative church and not everyone approved, but the kids sure did!

People always had an easy time confiding in her. I didn't inherit that trait from her. She was warm and non-judgmental. She liked being seen as a rebel herself, because she was one. Kids from the church who smoked or did things their parents didn't know about would talk to her. She understood them.

I made her watch "Back to the Future" (in the late 90's). She was not interested at all and ended up loving all three movies.

We listened to Rondo Veneziano on cassette in the car in the early 90's, when they were popular. She had bought quite a few albums.

Les gamins de mon age l'adorait parce qu'elle etait cool. J'etais a la fois flattee et un peu jalouse -c'est la mienne!
Une fois en camp de jeunes avec notre eglise, elle avait amene la musique de Sister Act et on chantait tous. C'etait une eglise assez stricte et tout le monde n'avait pas approuve, sauf les jeunes!

Les gens se sentait toujours en confiance avec elle, pour lui parler de tout. Je n'ai moi meme pas herite de ce trait de caractere. Elle etait chaleureuse et ne jugeait pas. Elle aimait etre vue comme rebelle, car c'est ce qu'elle etait. Les jeunes de l'eglise qui fumait ou faisait des trucs en cachette de leurs parents venaient lui parler. Elle les comprenait.

Je l'avais forcee a regarder "Retour vers le Futur" (fin des annees 90). Elle n'etait pas du tout interressee, mais apres avoir vu la trilogie, elle avait adore et change d'avis!

On ecoutait Rondo Veneziano en cassette dans la voiture quand leur musique etait a la mode, debut des annees 90... Elle avait achete pas mal d'albums.

Memory 28

She loved to play the piano, though she only learned as an adult and was never very proficient. She could play a good few songs and enjoyed practicing very much.
In the mid 80's, when she still didn't now how to play, she had bought this old piano that needed tuning really bad. It was probably cheap, because she could not afford a nice tuned piano. It was also very old and had ivory keys.
I used to play on it because it was fun for a kid to bang on those keys. We didn't have it long, she must have sold it back, but I remember it still...


Elle adorait jouer du piano, meme si pourtant elle ne savait pas en jouer avant la trentaine. Elle connaissait quelques melodies et aimait beaucoup s'entrainer.
Dans les annees 80, avant qu'elle ne sache jouer, elle avait achete ce vieux piano completement desaccorde; il devait etre vraiment pas cher car elle ne pouvait pas se permettre un bon piano. Il etait si vieux que les touches etaient en ivoire.
Je jouais dessus parce que pour un enfant c'est tres amusant de taper sur les notes, meme desaccordees. On ne l'a pas eu longtemps, elle avait du le revendre, mais je m'en souviens bien.

Today is her mother's birthday, she turned 81. When mom lost her dad in 1989, we lived closer to my grandmother (than we did before). It was still a 2 hour trip from our place to hers and my mom and I visited every single weekend for a long time -maybe a year or two. We'd take her places (she doesn't drive). Not too long ago my grandma said mom was very close to her -even though it has not always been true.


Aujourd'hui c'est l'anniversaire de sa maman; elle a eu 81 ans. Quand maman a perdu son pere en 1989, on habitait plus proche de ma grand-mere qu'avant. Ca faisait quand meme 2 heures de route jusqu'a chez elle mais on y allait tous les weekends pendant assez longtemps -un an, surement 2. On l'emmmenait se promener ou faire les magasins car elle ne conduit pas.
Il n'y a pas tres longtemps, ma grand-mere m'a dit que maman etait tres proche d'elle -meme si ce n'a pas toujours ete le cas.

She loved Robert Redford; he was her ideal American cowboy. I remember a magazine cover with him, from the mid-80's. He had a mustache and I didn't understand why she found him so handsome...


Elle aimait beaucoup Robert Redford. Je me souviens on avait un Geo (magazine) des annees 80 et il etait sur la couverture. Moi je ne le trouvais pas beau du tout avec sa moustache, mais elle le trouvait tres beau, son ideal masculin.

Memory 25

We started attending church when I was about 7 or 8 years old. It may have been the 1st Sabbath or one of the first. We had sang this one hymn, nymber 25 I remember it and as we walked back home from church, we both were singing it loudly in the street. Someone in front of us turned around.
I don't know what it is called in English, but here is the music with French words:






On a commence a aller a l'eglise quand j'avais 7 ou 8 ans. C'etait notre premier sabbat ou un des premiers, et on avait chante l'hymne 25 qu'elle avait bien aime. En rentrant a pied a la maison, on avait chante toutes les deux a tue-tete dans la rue. Quelqu'un s'etait meme retourne pour nous regarder!

Memory 22, 23 and 24

She was very strong and she could cut wood with an ax. We lived in a place that was very cold in the winter for a year, in the Alps. I don't know if we had anything to heat that place other than space heaters and a wood stove. I remember having frost on the inside of the windows. One day she went down to split some wood while I was upstairs, shivering. She came back all sweaty and not wanting to ligth a fire (she probably did anyway).

We used to go to this farm on weekends that was owned by church members and she would work there because she loved the outdoors and farm work. I remember her sending logs down the rocky mountain side with the guys that worked there too. I remember her flexing her arm muscles and they were big! (this was in the mid to late 80's, I was around 8 years old).

In April 2010, we had an Easter picnic with the church at a farm. We had activites and games and one of them was to cut wood with an ax. She had also had to cut wood for the fireplace when she lived in Colorado, so this was something she definitely knew how to do.
She amazed all the guys there by her strength and skills.







22 - Elle etait tres forte et pouvait couper du bois avec une hache. On habitait dans une maison qui etait tres froide, un hiver. Je ne me rappelle pas si on avait autre chose pour se chauffer qu'un poele a bois et quelques radiateurs electriques. Je me souviens qu'on avait de la glace a l'interieur des fenetres. Un jour elle etait descendue pour couper du bois pendant que je grelottais en haut. Elle etait remontee en sueur et ne voulait pas allumer le feu -mais l'avait surement fait!

23 - Vers 1988, on allait dans une ferme chez des amis d'eglise car elle aimait travailler dehors. Je me souviens d'une des activites a laquelle elle pretait main forte: elle envoyait des troncs d'arbres coupes sur le flanc de la montagne sur une pente rocheuse avec d'autre travailleurs. Je me souviens quand elle me montrait ses biceps, ils etaient tres gros!

24 - En Avril 2010, on etait alle a un picnic de Paques avec notre eglise et il y avait des activites et des jeux. L'un d'entre eux etait de couper du bois avec une hache, chose qu'elle savait donc tres bien faire -elle le faisait aussi souvent quand elle habitait dans le Colorado, pour la cheminee.
Ce jour la elle avait vraiment impressionnee tout le monde par sa force et son agilite.

In L.A., 1998, with my friend Christel who traveled with us that year. We are walking in the city somewhere and this car is driving by. She notices he had a flat tire so she starts talking to him in French, but he's too far to hear. He still notices she's talking to him and what she's talking about, Apparently he knows he has a flat tire so he tells us and gestures that he knows. She replies "Alors si tu le sais, ca va!" (If you know, then it's cool). My friend and I just died laughing.


Los Angeles 1998, avec mon amie Christel qui avait fait le voyage avec nous cette annee la. On se promene en ville et une voiture passe pas loin de nous. Elle a un pneu a plat, alors maman commence a parler au conducteur en francais, mais il est trop loin pour l'entendre. Cependant il voit bien qu'elle lui parle, et de quoi elle parle. Apparemment il sait qu'il a un pneu a plat alors il nous le fait comprendre. Elle lui repond "Alors si tu le sais, ca va!" Ma copine et moi etions explosees!

Memory 21

When I was 11 months old, she put me on a pony grazing in a field to take a picture. She was horse crazy: she had climbed on a cow when she was little because her parents could not afford riding lessons.
I caught her passion and I still enjoy riding very much.


Quand j'avais 11 mois, elle m'a mise sur un poney qui broutait dans un champ pour prendre une photo. Elle adorait les chevaux: elle etait montee sur une vache gamine car ses parents ne pouvaient pas lui payer des lecons d'equitation.
J'ai herite de sa passion et j'aime toujours autant faire du cheval.

Memory 20

We had a dog, Belugue. He was a great dog. She had trained him to obey her very well. When we lived by the beach, we'd take him for walks without a leash and he would listen and stop at crosswalks, and cross when she'd tell him to go. Of course, he did that anywhere we went.
She did the same things with dogs she owned later: taught them to obey her voice so they woudn't have to be on a leash. She liked having them 'free'.


On avait un chien, Belugue. C'etait un chien super. Elle l'avait dresse a lui obeir. Quand on habitait pres de la plage, on l'emmenait se promener sans laisse et il s'arretait aux passages pietons, et traversait quand elle lui disait "Aller!". Bien sur, il obeissait de la meme maniere partout ou on allait.
Elle avait fait la meme chose avec les chiens qu'elle a eu plus tard: elle leur apprenait l'obeissance a sa voix pour qu'ils n'aient pas a etre attaches en laisse.

Memory 19

Memory#19 (12/3/12)
When I was at the hospital for Asher's birth, she was the first to visit because she had come from TN and stayed with us. I had called her in the middle of the night to tell her he was born and she came the next morning to the hospital. She had stopped at the hospital's gift shop and had bought two stuffed animals, one for me -a bear that had a sweater with "I love you" on it- and one for Asher, a reindeer with a scarf (it was one week before Christmas). I still have both of course...


Quand j'etais a l'hopital pour la naissance d'Asher, c'etait notre premiere visiteuse, car elle etait descendue du Tennessee et etait restee avec nous. Je l'avais appelee au milieu de la nuit quand il est ne et elle etait venue nous voir le matin suivant. Elle s'etait arretee au magasin de souvenirs de l'hopital et avait achete deux peluches, une pour moi -un ours avec un pull qui dit "I love you"- et une pour Asher, un renne avec un echarpe (on etait a une semaine de Noel). J'ai toujours les deux bien sur...

Memories 17 & 18

Memory #17 (12/1/12)
When I was little, before I could read, we'd play a card game similar to Go Fish, where you'd have to make a 'family' of 6 members (Mom, Dad, Son, Daugther, Granpa, Grandma). I had these cards and the families were animals -dogs, cats, horses, pigs. They were really cool. I remember the father pig was a butcher; I loved the mother horse, she was a circus horse.
Mom said I was a fierce player, I remembered all the cards and did not like to lose.


Quand j'etais petite, on jouait au jeu des Sept Familles. J'avais un jeu avec des familles d'animaux -chiens, chats, chevaux, cochons. Elle etaient super cools. Je me souviens du pere cochon qui etait boucher, et j'adorais la maman cheval qui etait au cirque.
Maman disait que je connaissais toutes les cartes et que je n'aimais vraiment pas perdre!


Memory #18 (12/2/12)
In New York City, in 1996 (our first time), as we were walking by Central Park, there was a school bus parked in the street and it was open -no driver in sight. She climbed in so I could take her picture at the wheel!


A New York, en 1996 (notre premiere fois), on se promenait pres de Central Park et il y avait un autobus scolaire gare sur le bord de la route, la porte ouverte et pas de conducteur en vue. Elle est montee dans le bus pour que je prenne sa photo au volant!
