I am rattled. That is the word that seems to fit. As I get closer to the trip, I realize it is the most emotional journey of my life and the hardest thing I have ever had to do.
I cried all the way to daycare this afternoon... I find myself shaking inside and being very... well, emotional.
I got a message from the daughter of Dave and Ginny, from Cheyenne. I tried to contact the family for a little while because they mean so much in this process. I learned that Dave also passed away last year and it saddens me deeply. I look forward to see and hug Ginny and meet one of their daughters. Funny how some people leave a mark. I know my mom did too.
I'm getting things ready. A playlist. A list of things to bring -so many things to think about.
Mom was the queen of lists. She would write lists months in advance and start packing weeks before a trip. She was so organized -a little too much. I'd always make fun of her :-)
A place for remembering my mom and pour out my soul.

Preparing Wyoming
In less than a week, I will be in Colorado. I'm preparing for the most emotional journey of my life. My heart feels like it's been pounded with a meat tenderizer when I imagine it. I picture taking her to Cheyenne one last time, where we made so many good memories together.
Then on to the mountains.
I hope it will be sunny.
Words cannot express...
Here is a picture she took and edited.

Almost 6 months. Presque 6 mois.
It’s almost been 6
months. It feels like yesterday you were still with us.
I found wedding pictures – cut out in your fashion, without the ex-husband- and divorce papers. I stopped to cry a couple of times. The first time, what triggered it was thinking “How could someone not make it to 2012?” It was like realizing you had not kept up and were stuck in 2011 still.
I know my and your tears will be wiped away, but now they are running warm. They are a blessing, a relief, a cleansing, a release, a healing.
I may sound like a
broken record, but I went through more stuff today. I went to work and could
not stop coughing even though I was feeling OK otherwise, so I came home and
decided to take this opportunity to keep chipping at it, all those memories
stashed in boxes, plastic sleeves and metal tins.
I decided to part with
the cactus flowers from Arizona and the cotton puff from Louisiana, after
taking their pictures. I kept the sequoia pinecone, from California.
I found wedding pictures – cut out in your fashion, without the ex-husband- and divorce papers. I stopped to cry a couple of times. The first time, what triggered it was thinking “How could someone not make it to 2012?” It was like realizing you had not kept up and were stuck in 2011 still.
The second time was
when I found the birthday card you wrote to me for my 21st, the year
we moved to the States. The card says “To a purrrrrrfect daughter –Happy Birthday”
(it has a cat in it). And you wrote:
“My so delicious
daughter (your English was not that good!), (the rest is in French, I’ll
translate it) ever since you turned 16, I have given you American journeys.
Today, for your 21st birthday, I offer you AMERICA! You have time,
space, and God will do the rest. I love you. Your Mom (in English)
Another time was when
I found a folded napkin and I knew exactly what was on it before I opened it,
even though it was written 15 years ago. It was the address and phone number of
a certain Bob, a very sweet man, we met in ‘our’ bar in Cheyenne. He was a
Cheyenne resident and invited us to his table, we were ‘in’. He introduced us
to another Bob who wanted to marry you and we met Blake around that time too.
One day, we all went out to breakfast at about 4 AM after a night out with the
cowboys.
I cannot listen to the National Anthem without crying anymore. I don’t hear it often; I don’t go to events where it is sung much. Last night, I went to a Magic’s game and this little girl sang it. I teared up. The Star Spangled Banner is you. I’m not patriotic, but you were. I can picture you standing up, beaming with pride, your hand on your heart, so happy every time it was played, because you were in your country, the one you chose for yourself, your dream come true.

The other day I talked
to Mamie (your mom), and she knows about death and pain. She lost her mother at 37 (she
was 62) and her husband at 58. She knows the pain takes time to settle in –and you
had told me too, about your dad, “it’s the absence”. Mamie put her finger on
it: it is the finality of it, the irreversibility that crushes us. Of course, I
have faith this is not the end, but it is the mortal end, before we put on
immortality. It is an end and it is damn painful.

Colorado, end of 2001
I know my and your tears will be wiped away, but now they are running warm. They are a blessing, a relief, a cleansing, a release, a healing.
I’m taking this song
to Wyoming. It touches a deep part of me and reminds me of you. Another ‘freedom’
song. Another song that makes you soar.
Je me suis arrêtée
La carte dit : « To a purrrrrrfect daughter –Happy Birthday »
Your Mom. »
yeux. « The Star Spangled Banner », c’est toi.
rappelle toi. Une autre chanson de liberté. Une autre chanson qui te fait
voler.

Dedication/Dedicace
Yesterday, I received
a copy of « Wyoming Lifestyle Magazine » in which a Facebook friend
of my mom’s (Linda) had the editor add a dedication to her. Linda
thought it was small, but to me it means the world because I know she would
have been so thrilled.
The photo is by DianaVolk who does amazing western photography and whom my mom was friends with on
Facebook as well.
I’m not doing so good
right now. I’ve had a tough day with the kids and I don’t know, the emotions
are closer to the surface. Here is the page that appears in the magazine. (photos are clickable to view larger).

14 Avril 1958-2012
It’s her birthday
today. She would have been 54. I’m spending the morning at home while Keith and
the kids are at church.
This is how I picture her… (pictures are clickable to view better)
Usually dates creep up
on me; I’m not good at anticipating birthdays and anniversaries. But today has
been looming big for a while. The weight of her being gone seems a little
heavier, because it’s been longer. Yet, when I look at pictures or things that
remind me of her, she doesn’t seem that far. Time has stopped for her. She’s
not missing us, she’s not hurting and I’m thankful for that.
The song below has
really touched my heart. The lyrics are so perfect and the version by Selah is
so full of freedom, I can picture her in her Wyoming with the wind in her hair,
smiling from ear to ear.
When I go don't cry for me
In my father’s arms I'll be
The wounds this world left on my soul
Will all be healed and I'll be whole
Sun and moon will be replaced
With the light of Jesus' face
And I will not be ashamed
For my savior knows my name
It don't matter where you bury me
I'll be home and I'll be free
It don't matter where I lay
All my tears be washed away
Gold and silver blind the eye
Temporary riches lie
Come and eat from heaven's store
Come and drink and thirst no more
So weep not for me my friend
When my time below does end
For my life belongs to him
Who will raise the dead again
It don't matter
where you bury me
I'll be home and I'll be free
It don't matter where I lay
All my tears be washed away
This is how I picture her…
And because of this
postcard we sent to ourselves (in France) when we were in Cheyenne in 1997 (our
first Frontier Days). She says: “Happiness is complete in cowboy’s land”. And I
say something stupid J
C’est son anniversaire aujourd’hui. Elle aurait
eu 54 ans.
D’habitude, les dates me prennent par surprise ;
All my tears (Toutes me larmes) -traduction
Seront guéries and je serai entière
Seront guéries and je serai entière
Le soleil et la lune seront remplacés
Par la lumière du visage de Jésus
Et je n’aurai pas honte
Car mon Sauveur connait mon nom
Par la lumière du visage de Jésus
Et je n’aurai pas honte
Car mon Sauveur connait mon nom
L’or et l’argent aveuglent
Frontier Days).

April 12, 2012
It’s been a while
since I wrote. I don’t think I had any dream she was in, since then.
Life is busy, but she’s
always on my shoulder. Sometimes I forget about it and then it hits me again.
I try to analyze some
of my feelings. It’s not easy. There is such a mix of them. The moment with the
most clarity of death itself, was the day I learned she had passed. So it is
when I think of that day, of how it unraveled, that I truly taste the finality
of death. But otherwise, it’s fuzzier. Like she’s somewhere else, living far
away perhaps. I had lived without her and I had spent long stretches of times
without seeing her in the past, probably up to a year if not more. We’d talk on the phone though. So it almost
feels like that.
I have found out I
miss her unconditional love, support and pride. I always enjoyed it, although
sometimes it was almost too much –how foolish of me to feel that way then.
The other day I requested recommendations from work superiors and they wrote great ones; and it hit me. She would have been so proud, but now, I had no one to be proud of me. It sounds stupid and childish, but I did miss her so much right then. I could hear her though. I can still hear what she would say in a lot of situations. I know what she would say and do if she saw me cry the way I do.

She hadn’t seen me cry
in a long time. I saw her cry instead. She was upset to be living with us. She
wanted to be free and not a burden to us. She had said not long ago that she
felt she had lost me. That still hurts so much. She did lose me a little… it
was not easy to juggle parenthood and ‘daughter-hood’, to be between my husband
and my mother, between my kids and my mother. I tried to make her feel better
with words, but my attitude spoke louder than my stupid words. It was stressful
at times. We tried to make the best of it, and often it was good. It had only
been 6 months since we all moved in together. It was a rough settling in.
Although, she never was the type of person to meddle or impose. She would
always try to get out of our way, blend in and be the best help to us.
The one thing I am
happy about is that we got her a spa treatment only a few days before her
passing, the Friday we went to Camp. It was Keith’s idea as a thank you for
everything she did for us and the kids. She appreciated it. I hope she felt the
love.
C’est presque come ça.

Ca me fait encore tellement mal.

I have dreamt about
her several times since her death –of course. But I had two dreams in a row,
these past two nights.
On Monday night, she
was back, but I knew she had died (I always know she has died), so I was
talking to her and crying. I wanted to spend more time with her and be a better
daughter. She didn’t say anything and showed no emotion (very unlike her).
Last night, I time
travelled and I knew I was back in time, but I guess I didn’t know how far back
in time I was, because I was frantically trying to call her to warn her of her death,
the way she would go, so she could stop it. I finally got her on the phone
(strange since we had been living together for 6 months) and warned her.
I think both dreams
were pretty short. In any case, I don’t remember them lasting.

Snowy Range
Well, since my last
post, I have found the exact place I want to take her –and thinking about it still
gets me incredibly emotional, more than anything else. I can usually hold
myself together, but if my mind wanders to Wyoming, I become a puddle.
The place will be off
of the Snowy Range Scenic
Byway or Hwy 130 in southern Wyoming. I was looking online for areas close to
where My Friend Flicka takes place and I saw the town of Centennial on the map –I
think I was looking at a Google map to see where the mountains started. I read
more about the town and the scenic byway came up, as it is very nearby. It rang a bell, I wondered if we had taken it
in one of our trips in the US, so I looked it up in the typed up version of my
journals: sure enough, there it was, July 1997. I was 17, she was 39. We drove
on it, on our way to Rawlins where we spent the night. Our true destination of
choice was of course Yellowstone. We
were departing Cheyenne, after spending our first Frontier Days… I didn’t say
much about it at the time, in my journal, but my guess is she was the happiest.
Cheyenne behind us, Yellowstone ahead, and her beloved Rockies.
I know it is the
place she belongs.

Off of Highway 130, Wyoming
I talked to my aunt
Jocelyne yesterday –her birthday is today. She’s my mom’s older sister (my mom
was number 2 of 4 girls). I really enjoy our talks, we talk about everything. She has no children but she
always kept in touch with her nieces, sending me lots of cards when I was
little. I never lived close to her, but I know she was present in my life.
Distance did not allow for us to be particularly close, we’d talk on the phone
once in a while. Now, it’s shifting a bit.
In the two hour
conversation we had, I told her about my plans and this is when my voice broke
and I could barely carry on. Asher and Sam were playing; we were all in the
yard. Asher came up to me with a glowing face just minutes after I had pulled
myself back together and said: “Jesus is coming back and we’ll fly with Him”… I
was still on the phone, but I heard it and responded “Yes, we will”.
Tonight, I cried
heavily all the way home. I miss her. When I see pictures, I see her skin, her
hands and I can feel them. There is this one picture at the Kennedy Space Center;
it’s a tourist picture (we went together in 2005, while she visited us in Florida
for the 1st time). She has her arm around me and her hand is on my
shoulder. I can feel that very hand. But it’s not there anymore… The hole is
getting bigger.
I’m OK though. I just
need to feel and bring this sadness out of me sometimes.
Depuis mon dernier post, j’ai trouve l’endroit
J’avais 17 ans, maman 39.
J’aime beaucoup lui parler, on
Elle me manque.
où on est au Centre de l’Espace Kennedy ;

Going to Wyoming -June 6th
Today, I got my flight to Denver booked. I had butterflies in my stomach.
I have been envisioning the moment when I bring her home and every time it churns my insides. Thinking of those beautiful mountains, those open spaces she loved so much, our road trips together makes me very emotional. I wrote a poem for her, for that very moment when I’ll let her go, setting her free in the earthly home she had chosen. Or had it chosen her?
This past week, I spent a few days being happy, normal, it didn’t get to me. Then last night, I replayed that fateful day, the phone call –the surreal stomach punch-, the ride home and the emergency vehicles stopped at our house. And today, getting the flight, I spent more time thinking of that time of releasing her and I was on the verge of tears a few times.
I don’t know if it is a real memory or if I made it up later, but when I drove up our street on that day, I’m pretty sure the song “Your great name” by Natalie Grant was playing and the verse “The enemy he has to leave, at the sound of Your great Name” came right when I was almost there. The enemy had to leave. He had left an ugly mark, but the victory was not his and he had to leave. Jesus is the truth, the way and the LIFE.
Aujourd’hui j’ai acheté mon billet d’avion pour Denver (Colorado). De l à j’irai dans le Wyoming. J’avais des nœuds dans l’estomac.

February 6
I have received the autopsy report since I last wrote, and this too was a big step. It was oddly clinical and cold to read about her dead body. The report is descriptive and does not attempt to explain what happened or how it happened, just the facts of her state at that point in time.
I have asked someone in the medical filed to help me understand the how and why, but have not discussed it with her yet.

I usually cry on the way home from work, it feels like I’ll never stop and yet I do, and no one in my family is able to tell I have cried.
Yesterday was the Super Bowl and we went to the first half of the church party and I was doing great until Kelly Clarkson sang the National anthem and then it just overwhelmed me. I could not stop crying… until I stopped, and I don’t think anyone noticed.
My mom loved this country so much; she had it in her blood. Going to rodeos, she would get up and put her hand on her heart when the Star Spangled Banner was sung. She bought the music sheet to play it on the piano. She loved the flag. She was very patriotic. But it was not about ideology or politics. It was about the land, and the people. How she loved this land!
I don’t know why I cry. I know why, but I don’t know why. Sometimes, I will feel like it doesn’t bother me at all that she’s gone and other times it crushes me. But it does not usually last very long. It just keeps coming back, over and over and over again. And I sort of welcome it, welcome the feeling of mourning, welcome the burning tears I can’t stop, and then get on with my life.
It is the memories. Even though our travels were already long gone, we cannot share the memories of them together anymore. It is all these little things that I could only share with her that are gone. Humor, French, places we’ve been together, inside jokes; good memories have become nostalgia. They are still good, but are weighted down with sadness.

The dog milestone / L'étape chien
What a day. Both Elliott and Gordon, my mom’s beloved dogs, are gone.
We had put up and ad and asked friends to spread the word about a month and a half ago, but nothing came out of it. We enjoyed spending that time with them, going on walks with them, playing with them and cuddling them. They are such sweet dogs. But we could not afford to keep them… We spent a bunch of money on them to get them up to date on their shots, get them flea and heartworm medication and we just can’t even afford the small monthly cost of food and medicine.
Just this week we decided to make up a deadline: once the bag of food we had just bought was gone, we would have to take them to the shelter, a thought my mom and us really hated. But we learned they do not euthanize dogs unless they are aggressive and they would probably have a good chance of being adopted, being young and attractive (sad to say for the other dogs).
Last night, I decided to put up one ad per dog –we had one ad with both of them so far and had gotten a couple of calls. I added nice pictures, a history, a description of their personality, why we needed to let them go, etc…
That same night, we got 2 calls for Elliott and one call for Gordon (on the old ad). The man who called for Gordon said he could not afford the $100 re-homing fee we decided to charge to avoid nasty people who do bad things to ‘free to good home’ pets. Well, we figured if they cannot afford $100, they cannot afford to keep a dog anymore than we do.
After the phone calls, I went to the garage to spend some time with the dogs and I just broke down and cried with them. Gordon looked so sad… I had a feeling I was saying goodbye. As I sat there, I wondered how many times they had comforted her when she cried. She loved them so much…
We had been emailing a lady who was first interested in Gordon a little while back. She had emailed me back on Monday (1/23) to let me know they had gotten another dog but he had viciously attacked her neighbor… so she was considering Gordon again. She happened to be in our neighborhood today –even though she’s never up here and they live pretty far from here. So she called and came to see him. Her family has another dog that looks just like Gordon and is the same age, but is female and loves to play just like him. That family also has two 10 year old kids (twins?). She was pleased with his greeting –no vicious attack- and decided to take him. I was at work, so Keith called me and I came home to see him off. I cried all the way home.
Elliott looked a bit upset. He ate some food and later threw it all up in the yard.
A couple of hours later, we received a phone call from a family that had called last night for him and sounded very interested in him. They asked if they could come up to see him (they live in Windermere, about 45 minutes from us). The whole family came after dinner, mom, dad and the two kids, a 10 year old boy and a 12 year old girl. Elliott was very shy and stayed close to us. We asked him to climb in their SUV when they decided to take him and we had to pick him up, then he jumped back down when Keith walked away to go get something. Then I asked him again, and he jumped in of his own accord, like he knew.
And now, I cry as I write this too because it’s not so much about the dogs. I’m so happy they both got the perfect family for their needs and personalities and I know this was all master orchestrated by God Himself –nothing is too small for Him to be interested in. This timing was incredible. Keith had prayed last night, I had prayed also a few days ago and another friend was praying for them too.
It is about driving the reality home that she really won’t be coming back for them. It is making her death a little more final. It is the milestone that is finally opening the floodgates…

Elliott

Things / Choses
(Photos are clickable to view larger).
I spent some more time going through her boxes. I know it’s going to take a long time because there aren’t that many chances to do it for a long enough while at a time.
She kept a lot of sentimental things such as my shoes, things from our trips in the US (flyers, maps, postcards, booklets, pens –she had a gazillion pens!- stickers, key chains, pins, etc…). She has letters from her parents, sisters, friends, mother’s day drawings and poems from me. I don’t know what to do with all this.
Our last move has pushed me to get rid of more of our stuff and I can’t stand clutter, so I’m always looking for ways to NOT keep things around if we don’t need them.
She was not exactly a pack rat, but she did keep some things. Some of them are easy to get rid of because they hold no meaning for me. Some are harder because, even though they hold no meaning, I’m curious about what they are, and think that maybe someone knows… Other things I really don’t know what to do with. There are a couple of antique items (a camera from the 30’s, a doll with real hair, old glasses).
And then there are the things I want to protect, such as some of her writings, drawings, photos of course.
It is so slow and painstaking.
And then there are the things I want to protect, such as some of her writings, drawings, photos of course.
It is so slow and painstaking.
I don’t have a lot of emotion when I do this –sort, pack, throw away. Maybe I don’t allow myself to think much. Or maybe it’s because bits of her are in all that stuff and I feel together with her.
I get emotional when I actually think about it, think about her in a different way. It’s so hard to describe.
I think part of me wants to ‘package her up’ in a pretty box. I want to gather her belongings, make sure I have the best of the best, then put it away, bring it out from time to time. But her, I want to keep close, write about her, think about her dreams, think about her accomplishments, think about her life, her love, her passion. And that is when I cry.
